CPU Spec recommendation for upgrade
« on: June 06, 2017, 04:10:53 PM »
Hello,im working a lot in photogrammetry using dji phantom 4 pro % inspire pro. Lately my project had gone bigger and bigger and i feel a need in upgrading my current pc.
My current specs are :
I7 4790
16GB of RAM
Radeon R9 290
128 GB SSD for os and programs & 1TB spinner drive for project data

My latest project was 3d mapping of a city and we took 2500 images from phantom 4 pro.

So,whats the best upgrade path should i take?does oc'ed i7 7700K makes a diffefence? (I read somewhere that PS prefers high ghz instead of core count). Or should i go to xeon / RYZEN ?
And GPU,does it prefer OpenCL ? Im looking to upgrade to 1080 or 1080 ti.
Thanks in advance for your insight :)

Hello AlphaWhiskey,

You can check Anandtech benchmarks related to Ryzen CPU (although they have used older version of PhotoScan):
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11170/the-amd-zen-and-ryzen-7-review-a-deep-dive-on-1800x-1700x-and-1700/17
As for i7 7700K, it should be faster than i7 4790 due to higher frequency.

GPU in the version 1.3 can be used for the image matching and depth maps calculation. For NVIDIA cards PhotoScan is using CUDA and for AMD cards - OpenCL. For GPUs higher number of CUDA cores / Shader Processor Units means faster processing in general (rough) approximation.
