Why still no .NEF support?
« on: June 25, 2017, 01:38:53 PM »
Just wondering, is there a reason why Photoscan won't work with NEF files.  Other photogrammetry software like Reality Capture handles them without any problem.

Hello ozRocker,

I've moved this topic to Feature Requests forum. We'll consider NEF format support for the next version updates.

The reason why we do not support native camera formats is related to the fact that most of them is proprietary and may differ even for different camera models from the same manufacturer.

Well Nikon is no small brand and other photogrammetry software supports NEF. I'm confused why they aren't using this excuse

Hello ozRocker,

We'll see, if we would be able to support NEF from some camera models in the next updates.

New camera releases may have modified NEF format, so implementation of RAW data support wouldn't work once and for all.

You might try dcraw: http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/
It can convert NEFs to TIFF.

Why not to NEF to DNG which is also a raw and is supported by AGI. (Adobe DNG converter is free and pretty fast converting hundreds)
I personally dont see major advantage in supporting raw files natively better than use a real raw developer and use all its power to squeeze the raw info to best what is delivered by pscan out of a default raw development.
Would like to read arguments on the contrary.
