Mapping a large area without a drone
« on: January 21, 2018, 10:03:46 AM »
Hi Community,

I would like to ask for suggestions to map a large landscape (~100acres) in an area where I can't use a drone. Is there a possibility to do this from the ground?

I will be able to mount a camera on a vehicle and drive along the area. But I am worried about the ground sampling distance as well as the elevation of the terrain which needs to be represented in the model.

Anyone ever tried something like this before?

hi
if its posible use a kite that should work just fine
otherwise use a long pole and take oblique photos from the pole driving or walking transects
depends on the type of terrain you might be better off using the panorama mode and create your model from a large number of panorama stations

You have probably checked to get resolution and pricing info for the data. In case you haven't .. MapMart and others sell high resolution data of many areas across the world.

Hi Kai,

Pole photography is probably the best option.
Many modern mirror-less or DSLR cameras can be triggered via app on your phone/tablet. It also gives you live-view options to check the coverage in your pictures.

What GSD were you aiming for?
