PC advice please
« on: November 29, 2012, 02:43:20 AM »
Hi all
I'm after a little advice and would really value your advice.
I'm using a small UAV to capture images for wildlife and conservation type projects here in the UK and have purchased Photoscan pro for it's various functions.
I now need to buy a suitable pc that will handle approximately 200 images of approximately 4 mb each but not being very IT minded am struggling to find something suitable within my budget.

I have found this pc from a well respected supplier and wondered if anybody could tell me if it would be a suitable choice?

Briefly here are the specs-

Corsair Carbide 400R
Intel Core i7 3930K overclocked to 4.7GHz
Corsair H100 Water Cooling Unit
Asus X79 Sabertooth TUF Motherboard
16GB of Memory (expandable to 64GB (!!))
Either GeForce GTX 660 OR Quadro 600 at same price
120GB Corsair Force 3 SSD Drive
2 x 1000GB SATA 7200rpm Hard Disks in RAID 1
LG Blu-ray Rewriter Drive (Supports burning to BD, DVD, CD)
Corsair 600W Power Supply
Internal Card Reader Drive
On board High Definition Audio
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit OEM

If I go with this one it would be with the 16gb of Ram for now and will upgrade when budget allows.

Any thoughts?

many thanks
Luke

Luke that config is ideal for you, and the RAM should cost just few buck more ( aprox 250 EUR = 200 Pounds ), but consider to change the  GPU for ATI brand, like 7950 or similar, is twice fast as Nvidia for same price.....

Hello,

I am thinking to get the same PC, basic configuration, but with the Chillblast AMD Radeon HD 7970 3072MB. Would that be ok for similar tasks?

thank you, I really do not know anything about hardware...

Hello,

it is me again. I know that the PC mentioned above will probably be good but I would like to have again a specific tipp what a computer should have if I want to do the following. I am asking again because my boss will use your answer as a reference when it comes to the question which PC we will buy:

I have run a test with the model parameters I will use most of the time with 39 pictures on my fastes PC, which has:
- Windows 7 64 bit
- 8 GB RAM
- i7-3770 @ 3.4 Ghz
- RADEON HD 7770

No other programmes were run during this time. My operations took this time:
- Align photos: 7 minutes
- Build geometry: 3 hours 54 minutes (CPU constant at 100%, RAM at 4 GB during this operation)
- Build texture: 10 min
- Export Orthophoto: 17 min

If I want to do the same (same specifications for building geometry, DEM resolution, Orthophoto resolution, etc.) with about 200 pictures instead of 39 AND I want to work with PC power intensive Programmes (like ArcGIS and/or Photoshop) at the SAME TIME (which I did not during the test), what PC specifications/model would you recommend?

Thank you very much for your advice,
Ludwig Hilger

Ok, wne so then you need this one :-) http://www.thinkmate.com/System/SuperServer_5086B-TRF

Think on that Pscan use all resources and its not clever to use it on other things when doing reconstruction...... Best if you use it just for reconstruction adn then use with other sw.

You have not specified reconstruction quality and size of images for better recomendation on RAM and other stuff

Hello Wishgranter, thanks for the fast answer!
Hmm, ok, the Superserver is not in our budget ;)
So the best option would be to get a PC that can do the work for the 200 images over night (say in 10-11 hours) so I can work with Photoshop and ArcGIS during the day.
The images have the following specifications:

- Taken by Sony nex-5
- 4592*2576 Pixels
- size up to 10 MB per image
- 24 bit
- 350 dpi
- here is a sample image: http://www.altmuehlnet.de/~hilger/DSC00188.JPG

Reconstruction quality would be Ultra high and Sharp. Is there a way to estimate how processing time would develop with higher image number under same reconstruction quality settings etc.

By the way, does Photoscan support GTX 660 Ti?

thank you again,
Ludwig

Hello, sorry for delay ( lot of paper work )

So s 200 x 10Mpix images and ULTRA, Can share it so cantest it how much ram it would need ? its hard to say from head, but persoanly im thin k that 64 GB should be enought.... other parameters are OK, even better if overclock CPU nad GPU eventuely (10-25-30 % faster reconstruction )

If can share dataset and send invitation to muzeumhb@gmail.com

Dear Wishgranter,
we do not have 200 image dataset yet, this is what we will generate next summer. But thank you for the RAM information. I have one LAST question. I do not like overlocked CPUs, what non-overclocked CPU should I get instead of the overclocked mentioned above to get a similar performance?

thank you, I appreciate this very very much!

Hello Ludwig

Im guessign that you have i7 in 1155 socket, its a 4 core part, So fastest in same socket/MB is a 3,5 GHz, personally would not change it...... Overclocking is normally accessible even with bigger brands  like BOXX tech or many more, but heypay premium for that.....

If want not overclock, then you need a 2011 socket with 6 cores and some better MoBo, but the prices are higher as in 1150 socket....
