Z800: quadro and geforce can coexist?
« on: December 11, 2012, 10:50:30 PM »
I've an HP Z800, dual Xeon 4core, 24GB ram and now 1 video card Quadro FX1800.
To improve gpu use, I'd add a GeForce gtx680 Lightning 2GB and I'll be grateful if you can suggest me if it's a well worth to mount only the gtx 680 or if there is a way to mount together and install different drivers. (if it is possible)
Any suggestion is well appreciated

Nice suggestion but.....unfortunately the gtx680 has been bought.....
Have you had some trouble with this card and its drivers for Z800?

I do not think that the 7970 card data is accurate.

I have both cards and I did test
old card GTX 580 4.20 s
ATI 7970 3.50 s

48 photos. 14 megapixel
clean test. calculate the same depth map
7970 graphics card is only much faster. 10-20% of max.

Thank for this suggestion. I've bought a gpx680 after reading in this (excellent) forum a lot of good report on it. I hope it could work fine for me even if I would prefer to use both card together to increase the gpu number...but this seems not possible because it involves different driver providers.

Hello Paolo,

Quadro and GeForce cards could be used together if it is allowed by nVidia drivers.

However, most Quadro cards do not show good PhotoScan performance.

Kris, if:

I do not think that the 7970 card data is accurate.

I have both cards and I did test
old card GTX 580 4.20 s
ATI 7970 3.50 s

are absoultly useles benchmark, if you know how OpenCL work , then you must know that test under 1minute are absolutley unprecise. - PCI-E response time, kernel initialisation and few other things realted to work of OpenCL technology...

And few people here reported that its realy fast, so if im should believe facts then im believe reports of few people here. And from internal speech about how pscan work is highly possible that its TRUE with 7970 card. Will have it on thuesday, friday so will post results onmy own benchmarks.......

" then you must know that test under 1minute are absolutley unprecise"

my test lasts 4 minutes.
It is rather plausible.
Maybe the fault of the drivers.
Waiting for your test.
I hope that the money well spent.

I updated the drivers.
I did a solid hour test.
ATI 7970 graphics card is slightly faster than the GTX 580.
OK 20%.
Someone who did the tests. Had overclocked CPU.
This may be the cause of good results.
It is faster exchange of data between the card and the processor.

or someone makes a joke, or work for ATI.

Kris have you disabled right amount of cores for the GPU ? if have i7 and 680 + 7970 you need disable not 2 but 4 cores in Pscan..... try our dataset from here https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15047343/Benchmark-sample01.zip

setings:

Run the benchmark on ARBITRARY - SMOOTH - ULTRA - Face Count 0 - Filter treshold 0,5 - Hole treshold 0,1

afther that = Go to menu VIEW - CONSOLE search for end of the console for something like this

and copy performance data to the provided EXCEL file and send to muzeumhb@gmail.com

timings: rectify: 0.001 disparity: 0.015 borders: 0.04 filter: 0 fill: 0
finished depth reconstruction in 4.376 seconds
Device 1 performance: 120.354 million samples/sec (GeForce GTX 560 Ti)
Total performance: 120.354 million samples/sec
Generating mesh...

Device 1 performance: 130,163 million samples / sec (CPU)
Device 2 performance: 400,916 million samples / sec (Tahiti)
Total performance: 531,079 million samples / sec

I'm sorry, I do not believe in this test.
This test is very specific synthetic.
Something is not right.
My old card is gtx 580 is only 180  million samples / sec
But the time of calculation is very similar.
This test measures the speed of the card, not the real time calculation.

I did some tests on large files.
Without masks.
Photos lot of detail. Lot of points
MPX 21, 40 - 100 images.
tests from 4 minutes to 60 minutes.
I have clear results that ATI is only 20% faster than the old GTX580 card.
I'm not happy about it: (
