I'm not recommending this over another method, its just some information to consider if building your own.
If you have the time or interest, a bit of research could save some money.

If using Canon point and shoot cameras (not DSLRs), CHDK (no cost) allows the camera's to sync when taking a shot, so raspberry pi is not needed.
