Question on Camera Equipment
« on: June 07, 2018, 01:34:38 PM »
I'm planning on getting this macro lense for capturing small objects. (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/791322-REG/Sony_SEL30M35_30mm_f_3_5_Wide_Angle_Lens.html)

I'm wondering if anybody here sees a reason against using it for photogrammetry since it's not the most expensive and especially a 30mm lense?Or maybe someone already has already used it and can share experiences?

Thanks in advance for any help:)

Hi Gianni !

According to my experience and all I could have read here, nothing indicate you could not reach great result using that kind of lens !
On the contrary, using fixed focal length will insure a good image quality together with a good consistency through your images data-set.
Two tips I could give you to improve your results :
- Keep a fixed focus through your whole acquisition, so also a almost fixed distance between your object and your camera.
- Try to set the smallest aperture possible (here the best is f/22). Indeed, that kind of lens, together with a very short distance between your object and your camera, cause very short depth of field that may blur the very first foreground of your object, or at the opposite its background. So don't hesitate to take the time to calculate your DoF depending on your lens and your acquisition characteristics to ensure the perfect set-up !

Hi Gianni,

I have this lens on a a6600 for my macro-photogrammetry process since 10 months

Here is my feedback :

Of course this lens works and shows good results but its a bit tricky 30mm for 1:1 ratio, you need to be something like 2-3cm to the front on the lens to the object to reach this ratio. If it's a compact object no problem but if its not, you'll not able to have 1:1 everywhere on your model.
There are few chromatics issues with this lens when the object is grey.
Always use MF, FF is not so accuracy, maybe its better with a 6300-6500
I also use that : https://www.photo24.fr/walimex-pro-magic-arm-28cm.html pretty cool

Actually, i'm looking for a 100mm macro canon or 105 sigma, with a commlite canon > sony E
But a second hand sony E 30mm can be found for 90-100€, at this price, for a first try its perfect

If you have more questions ;)
Good day
