Exporting pointcloud without "out of bound points"
« on: January 09, 2013, 05:56:23 PM »
Hello fellow PSPs

I client of mine have big issues with the pointcloud generated in Photoscan Pro.
I have done a UAVflight with approx 600 pictures, generated a pointcloud with 6-8 GCPs.
When exporting the pointcloud he gets a lot of points out of bound.
Wich way is the easiest way to filter them when exporting?
They use Adtollo TopoCad 14 with pointcloud plugin.

Hello Johan,

If the sparse point cloud is exported, unwanted points could be deleted using selection tools before export.

Is it any difference in the sparse pointcloude before or after the geometry rendering regarding unwanted points?

Hello Johan,

Sparse point cloud is not effected by the reconstructed geometry, so it is possible to remove any points and export sparse point cloud even after the geometry is reconstructed.

Ok, i thoght it would be a "better" pointcloude being rendered and all.
A client gets a lot of missmatched points. Im trying to sort out how to minimize them without to much handywork. The sparse pointcloude contains 1,4mil points. A bit to much to sort out by hand.

Hello Johan,

You can use Projection error criterion and Free-form selection tool to minimize manual work.

But do you know what is the aim of sparse point cloud export required by your client? Maybe it will be better to export DEM in XYZ format which is based on the reconstructed geometry?

Hello.
Is there a way to export DEM pointcloude XYZ in sparse mode?
My pointcloude is 3,2 Gb. Pretty big to send over the internet.

Btw, who know why the point cloud export (e.g. XYZ format) is such a long process? Hours and hours ...

Hello George,

exporting a dense point cloud takes so long because the dense point cloud has to be computed first. It's a bit confusing that this feature was placed where it is (and that's why I didn't find it until Alexey told me about it). Exporting a dense point cloud means that PhotoScan will compute depth maps and from those compute the point cloud which is then (finally) exported.

It is still faster (and, very importantly) requires much less RAM than creating a meshed model.

Hello George,

Exporting data in text formats (non-binary) may take much longer time if performed on a network drive. Saving to the local disk should work much faster.

In the Export DEM dialog it is possible to specify the grid resolution of the exported DEM.

Hi,

I am exporting dense points after aligning photo. Does it possible to export only points in the bounding box and not all the points of of the model?

Thanks,

Sebastien
