Struggling to scan small plastic knob
« on: July 11, 2018, 08:43:26 PM »
Hello! I'm trying to acquire a 3D model of a small plastic knob, which I photographed while spinning it with a small motor. I've attached here one of the 60 pictures I've taken as well as the alignment. They both seem good! The final reconstructed model however looks noisy and blotchy and bad. Is there anything about this photo that looks like it'd be hard to build a reconstruction from it?

Here's a picture of the dense mesh, done on high detail.

That's not half bad actually. Dense 3d reconstruction is matching pixels from one view with pixels from another view. If the areas are smooth, low texture, then 3d information is difficult to reconstruct. The inside of the grooves looks pretty uniform. Shiny also makes it worse.

You might get a better model if you can find a way to coat the knob in something that produces visible patterns on the low texture areas. Sometimes spray paint can help here to reduce gloss. Might also try taking some sand paper to the knob and lighty sanding everything, including the inside of the grooves, to give it texture. Not enough to change the shape.

Otherwise, a different 3d reconstruction technique would work better (project light, line laser).

Hi Ezalys,

Are you using RAW format?

I'm not, I'm using JPEG. Does that make a significant difference?

Hi ezalys,
you can try a very thin layer of white wound care powder spray, in order to apply additional texture to your surface. The powder can be removed more easily than paint. Good luck!

It can. Even jpg with low compression introduces artifacts/noise. Many cameras can capture 11 or 12 bits although only 8 bits are saved as a jpg. (That's the per color channel, not the total)

Canon point and shoot cameras for example can use CHDK to allow the 11 or 12 bit RAW image to be saved in addition to the jpg.

Giving the knob a matte, white speckled finish yielded a beautiful scan.
