Turntable based Full body capture rig
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:10:38 AM »
The past few days, I've been busy building a turntable based photogrammetry rig. I've encountered a few issues with synchronization, lighting, apart from the post work and eventually got better. You can read all about it here: https://www.markflorquin.be/portfolio/building-a-3d-scanner/.

I hope it will provide useful information on building your own 3D capture rigs.

Enjoy!

Great results Mark. If you want a motorized turntable you can Google for Ortery but they are quite expensive but computer controlled which is very useful if you don't have a spare extra set of hands. There are other solutions though which you seem to have found. If you upgrade to 12-16 cameras you will see how much improvement you can get, I did some tests back in 2011, it's how I got the 'bug' : )

Hello!

This is great Mark! Thank you so much for sharing this!
I have been thinking of rotational rigs so this helps me immensely!
A tip for those thinking of trying a turntable http://cheesycam.com/motorized-lazy-susan-heavy-duty/ In the comments on that link this was posted http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28454.

Best, Magnus.

Thanks Foodman, Infinite & Magnus!

The turntable is motorized, completing a full rotation in 30 seconds. The camera's make around 20 photos. I've got mine from http://puchberger.nl/Draaiplateaus.htm

Having different camera's makes color calibration a pain. The next version will feature 4 identical models. I hope to sell some scans on Turbosquid for funding: ;)

Glad you learned from the article, Magnus.

Please share your findings, so we can all learn from each other.

Have a nice weekend,

Mark

Hey Mark. Love the work. You would be the perfect guy to talk to.

I've just got a small business grant to try and pull this off. Approx $5000.00NZ. Pretty comparable to USD. Already got the high speced machine and have setup base with some photographers in a shared space next to my flat in Auckland CBD. Just after some advise on a few things, kinda keen to know about the Lazy Susan you used, how you got it communicating with your PC and pretty much all the other questions..

What I've got so far is:

* 3 x EOS 600D (fixed 55mm lense) camera's with Tripods (means for mounting.)
* Access to decent LED based constant lighting.
* High spec'd machine with 32GB memory, latest Haswell architecture.
* Photoscan licence.

what I'm struggling with is deciding on the Lazy Susan setup and control mechanism and am also wondering the draw backs of constant lighting vs a strobed/flash lighting method.

Also, just to be clear, no interest in TurboSquad. We are getting an Oculus DKII in a few weeks and am wanting to work on 'real world' experiences with an Urban Exploration edge. It's pretty cool stuff :) Just starting though. To fund our endeavours I'm getting into flying drones for cinematic high-end real estate promotions. Basically just want to make enough, so I can make games :)

I did a 4 camera rig with studio lighting and an automated turntable that took 2 minutes to spin, results varied depending on how good the model was, any movement really produced massive amounts of noise and errors, some people who managed to stand perfectly still gave us very good results. We used software to read all the images from the cameras together and used flash trigger IR remotes to trigger all the cameras simulteantously, the most important factor to me is getting very very still life models, good lighting, low iso and decent camera positioning. We literally only had 1 day to do it, half a day for setup half a day to shoot, biggest drawback was our camera positioning in some shoots, we did not have enough time to do much tests and our rushing left us with some noise and errors and the movement as mentioned before.

good luck :-)

Very nice work Mark !

How do you deal with the "droit ? l'image" issue with your models that are displayed and sold ?

You found the post :) Great, Alexey.
@FLuca: On turbosquid I sell models that have agreed to be published. And scans of myself :)

Regarding the turntable, I have finetuned the setup and upgraded to 8 camera's. It's lightweight and delivers excellent results :) Anyone interested in an update? I might make a new post :)

All the best,

Mark, that's really impressive ! Considering you use only 8 cams, that really is great work.
